American author Harper Lee was born April 28, 1926 and is best known for her 1960 novel To Kill a Mockingbird - the only published novel she has - which deals with the issues of racism that were observed by the author as a child. To Kill a Mockingbird was an immediate bestseller and won great critical acclaim, including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1961. It remains a bestseller with more than 30 million copies in print. The book was made into the Academy Award-winning film with the same title in 1962 starring Gregory Peck. |
