The National Medal of Arts, the most prestigious award given by the US Government to honor artists, and National Humanities Medal were awarded yesterday by President Barack Obama to several American artists. We can find among the recipients of the Medal two well known female novelists, Joyce Carol Oates and Harper Lee - the latter being the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of To Kill a Mockingbird. Philip Roth, another Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, famous for Goodbye, Columbus and the so-called “American trilogy” received the Medal, too. Other recipients include actress Meryl Streep, jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins, musician Quincy Jones and pianist Van Cliburn. |
