Mikhail Bulgakov, one of the most important authors in Russian literature was born on May 15, 1891 in Kiev. He graduated from the Medical Department of Kiev University as a doctor but decided to leave medicine and pursue his love of literature instead. However, censorship soon prevented publication of his works as he was found to be "too anti-Soviet and against the government". He started his most important novel, The Master and Margarita in 1928 and continued writing it until his death in 1940. The book could only be published 26 years after his death; it was immediately an international success. |
