The blog entry of The Economist's Eastern Approaches, a blog dealing "with the economic, political, security and cultural aspects of the eastern half of the European continent", speaks about alarm bells: the blog entry titled 'Has Orbán over-reached?' gives a summary of the ruling Fidesz party's systematic takeover of previously independent institutions like the presidency, the state audit office and the media council. Now the activity of the Fiscal Council is in peril, because of severe cost in its budget. The article refers to the opinion of György Kopits, who said to Hungarian business daily newspaper Világgazdaság that Fidesz' s attack against the council was "reminescent of Hugo Chávez's Venezuela". |
